What is AI? A simple guide

What artificial intelligence is, what it can and can't do, and how people in India use it every day.

AI in one sentence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is software that has learned patterns from huge amounts of text, images, audio or other data, so it can do things that normally need human thinking — like answering questions, writing, translating, recognising pictures or speaking.

How do chat tools like ChatGPT and Gemini work?

They are “large language models”. They read billions of sentences during training and learned which words usually follow others. When you ask a question, they build an answer word by word based on those patterns. That's why they are fluent — and also why they can sometimes say things that sound right but are wrong.

What AI is good at

  • Explaining topics simply, in many languages including Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and more
  • Writing and improving emails, letters, posts and resumes
  • Summarising long documents
  • Creating images, videos, voiceovers and music
  • Translating, and reading text from photos
  • Brainstorming ideas and making plans

What AI is not good at

  • Guaranteeing facts. It can invent names, numbers, laws or links. Check anything important.
  • Knowing very recent events, unless it searches the web.
  • Medical, legal or financial decisions. Use it to understand, then confirm with a professional.
  • Keeping secrets. Don't share passwords, OTPs, Aadhaar or bank details.

How people in India use AI every day

  • A student asks for a chapter to be explained in simple Hindi, then takes a quick quiz.
  • A homemaker plans a week of meals and a grocery list within a budget.
  • A farmer photographs a sick leaf to understand the possible disease before visiting the KVK.
  • A shop owner makes festival-offer posters and product photos on a phone.

How to start (free)

  1. Open ChatGPT, Gemini or Meta AI (inside WhatsApp).
  2. Ask a question the way you'd ask a helpful friend — in any language.
  3. If the answer isn't right, tell it what to change. It's a conversation.
